- Every year, once September, October rolls around, we set up an outrageous Christmas display in our yard.
First thing we do is we get all the old decorations out.
Then we test everything.
If something is not working, we'll fix it.
And then probably by the first week of November, we'll start putting decorations out.
We turn it on Thanksgiving night.
- This year, we did start a little bit earlier because of the nice weather, so we're a little ahead of schedule this year.
- [Jimmy] We both love doing it.
- But he definitely does more of it than I do.
We'll come down when I'm doing other things and he'll start pulling stuff out to stage and stuff like that.
(Jimmy laughs) - Storage has always been an interesting thing for us.
We added onto our house back in 2016, so that actually gave us a bigger garage and we were able to put storage in this area.
We store underneath our steps, we store underneath our front porch.
We have stuff stored in our attic.
I think our problem is we never do things on a small scale.
We just kept on buying and buying and buying and buying decorations.
It does become an issue trying to find stuff.
If you want something at the bottom of the pile, you're gonna have a mess if you try to go get it.
- We do have a few things that we hang from the ceiling inside the basement area, so it really tucks away pretty well.
- [Jimmy] When it comes to the display, we do things kind of in zones.
We have our snowman area, we have our deer area.
- [Sheri] We also have what we consider our woodland area.
We put that over by the red tree.
- Could you grab me a six foot extension cord?
We're a team when it comes to this.
- My favorite decoration is the penguin pond.
It's something I found at the store, way back when, I can't even remember what year it was.
But I've always enjoyed that, and this year we put some twinkling lights in it to make it look neater.
- The tradition for me started when I was younger.
I did Christmas displays always with my parents.
So my favorite decoration is this very large blow mold Santa Claus that actually was purchased by my mother.
It's been in a number of places where we've moved.
It's always been with us and I do a lot of care and feeding on it every year to make sure it's still working.
We have a lot of inflatables.
If we would put all of our inflatables out, we'd probably have about 65.
There's a couple problems with them.
They use a lot more electricity and I get tired of having to cover them every time it snows 'cause they just don't do well in the snow.
Which, rain is also our enemy.
And then the other thing too is our rabbit problem.
We had a 12-foot Santa Claus, but we think rabbits or something put huge holes in the feet and it just won't inflate anymore.
- Yeah.
We still might fix it.
(Jimmy chuckles) - Our display's not a walk in the park.
There are things we have to do from an electrical standpoint.
When we first started out, we were using incandescent lights and they definitely use electricity.
Now, we're mostly LED lights, so the electric draw is not as bad.
We have at least 14 different zones of power and there's a balancing act to make sure that one zone's not using too much power which will cause things to trip or burn up.
(bright music) - So we do have a little Santa's mailbox.
We get a few letters in every year, so then we take them out and we make sure that they get sent to Santa.
(bright festive music) - [Jimmy] Traffic does get backed up.
Sometimes people aren't happy about all the traffic.
But, yeah, other than that, our neighborhood has been extremely supportive.
- They'll make comments, "Oh we really love your Christmas display.
We come by every night when it's lit up at Christmastime."
(bright music continues) We've even had people say something to our daughter about, "Oh, you should go see this house, they have really nice lights."
And she's like, "Oh yeah, I know which one.
That's my parents."
(both laughing) (bright music continues) Most of the year, people are really stressed out and stuff.
To me, it's the time that we can sit back and enjoy things and make people happy.
(bright music continues) - [Jimmy] We love doing it, especially when you see the look on people's faces, just see the look of wonder in kids' eyes.
That makes it worth it.
(bright music) (air whooshes)
