-Well, I'm from South Australia, which doesn't sound nearly as sweet as South Carolina.
Well, I've got three beautiful little children.
One of my favorite parts of becoming a dad has been bedtimes, but it's actually become one of the main times during the day where I really get to sit and play music.
It's funny that my little girls are into this song.
It's funny to me because it just doesn't sound like a nursery-rhyme sweet song.
It's sort of like a dark, introspective folk song, but I do play it on the ukulele at bedtime, so I think that helps.

Despite being born in the Jim Crow South, Dr. Mays rose to become a scholar, professor, mentor, minister, and one of the most important leaders of the American Civil Rights Movement.
I met with Reverend Christopher Thomas to learn a little more about this American icon.
-He was born in this house August 1st of 1894, to two parents who were both ex-slaves.
His parents were completely illiterate.
They could not read or write.
It's on the porch of this house where he has his first experience with a racial mob.
During the events of the Phoenix Riots, he was four years of age when a mob of men ride into Epworth on their way to Phoenix to lynch Negroes.
They lynched five of them that day, two the following day, one on Friday and one on Monday.
And so he said it was his earliest memory in life.
In other words, his mind was sort of seared in that moment.
-Mays was a gifted and hardworking student who rose through the scholastic ranks to become the president of Morehouse College.
It was there that Mays met and befriended a young Martin Luther King Jr. From that moment on, Mays became one of King's greatest influences.
King referred to Mays as his spiritual and intellectual mentor.
In fact, their connection was so powerful that in 1968, Dr. Mays delivered the eulogy at Dr. King's funeral.
-I don't think that any South Carolinian, black or white, has made a greater contribution to American life than Ben Mays.
I mean, he literally was the underpinning, the intellectual driving force behind all of what we know that became the Civil Rights Movement.
I personally think that Mays is kind of one of the unsung heroes in American life, that oftentimes people don't realize what he did.
And I really wish people would take more time to learn him.
You'll probably appreciate this being a musician.
When people say, "You know, well, how do you talk about Mays in terms of what people don't know about him?"
I say, well, it's kind of like you guys know who Whitney Houston is and Luther Vandross is.
But very few people know who Burt Bacharach was because he was the guy that wrote all the songs.
Mays was kind of like the songwriter, and these guys were the rock stars.
And so, you know the rock stars, but you don't know the songwriter.
-Well, I really do appreciate you taking the time to show me around today.
You are an encyclopedia of all things Dr. Mays, and it's a wonderful story.
And it means so much not just to Greenwood or to South Carolina, but to the entire world and especially to the United States.
So, thank you so much.

♪♪ -If you get a chance to visit Greenwood, you'll probably notice just how broad its Main Street is.
Folks around here say it's the widest main street in the United States, maybe even the world.
Another Greenwood highlight is their annual Festival of Flowers.
It's been going on forever and attracts tens of thousands of tourists every year.
And though their main street and flowers stand out, perhaps the most impressive part of this small community is its world-renowned genetic center.
I'm a songwriter, so I don't know anything about the world of genetics, and that is why I stopped by to talk to Lori Bassett about their life-changing work.
-With rare diseases, it can often take 6 to 7 years to get a correct diagnosis.
We have a unique methylation test that looks at how genes are turned on and off and up and down.
-What is methylation?
What does that mean?
-Methylation is just that.
It tells you how genes are turned on or off.
So, you may not have a change or a mutation in the gene itself.
But if that gene is turned off when it shouldn't be, or it's turned on when it shouldn't be, you're going to have some effects from that.
And we're the only lab in the United States that can do that kind of testing and pick those diagnoses up for these patients.
-It really is extraordinary for a small town to have something that is this world-renowned.
-Yes, it really is.
-All I do is write songs and play music.

And I've wondered many times, what is it that makes a man wake up in those kind of hellish conditions and want to fight his way out every day, instead of laying down and dying?
And I don't know what motivates all men, but I know what motivated my grandfather.
That was my grandmother, and they were married for over 50 years, y'all.
Now, I only saw my grandfather cry one time in my whole life, and that was the day they laid my grandmother in the ground when she lost her battle with breast cancer.
And that day, I watched that strong man break down like a baby at her graveside.
But that's what love should do to you, y'all.
It should make you want to live and die for somebody else.
That's exactly what this song is written about, y'all.
I hope all y'all have that kind of love.
It's the one thing that's going to heal this broken world we've been living in.
