VALENTINE: I'm doing good, guys.

And the location, to set the scene for people, we are here at the world-famous Kia Forum where so many have played, from Bowie and Prince, Elvis and the Stones, and the Kings and Lakers.

This is such an historic place and part of the Kia Forum's remarkable history includes Earth, Wind & Fire.

What does this building mean to you guys?

PHILIP: You know, we did five nights here.

We did five nights here by ourselves back in the day.

VALENTINE: Really?

So it's got history.

PHILIP: Yeah, this has so much history.

And, you know, we used to go to the- to the Lakers games, see the fabulous - you know, Showtime Lakers and, I mean, this- this was the place, this was the place to- to hang out and it's so great that it's still here.

VALENTINE: Yeah.

PHILIP: And they've done a marvelous job renovating it, so it's- it's- it's fantastic and it's a great way to- to end this tour.

VALENTINE: I love that.

RALPH: For me, it's really special because I saw the Forum being built, my family moved to Inglewood in 1966.

PHILIP: Oh, that's right.

RALPH: And all I saw were these big concrete forms, which are what you see going up the side, laying out in the field.

I said, "Man, what are they gonna do with all this?"

But I saw the Forum being built.

VERDINE: And, you know, when you have an iconic place... VALENTINE: Yeah.

VERDINE: Everybody knows about the Forum, not only in Los Angeles, but in other parts of the country.

VALENTINE: When you talk about watching it being built though, could you imagine as a young man knowing that you're going to be playing inside that venue?

RALPH: I had no idea, but since you bring it up, one of my greatest moments ever was to see my parents sitting out in the audience during that five-night run.

PHILIP: Oh.

VERDINE: Yeah.

Mm-hmm.

RALPH: Yeah.

So it was- I have great- great memories of the Forum.

VALENTINE: Were they singing along?

RALPH: I hope so.

VALENTINE: I hope so too.

(all laughing) They'd be in trouble at that point, right, if they hadn't been, right?

Earth, Wind & Fire not only is legendary for their amazing catalog and music, but their live shows, of course that we're talking about.

If you've ever seen them in concert, you know what I'm talking about.

So many moving parts, so many musicians on stage, obviously.

It's incredible stuff.

How long does it take to present this one-of-a-kind live show, Verdine, if you could speak to that.

VERDINE: Well, first of all, Philip directs the show.

VALENTINE: Yeah, okay.

VERDINE: And jokingly and affectionately, I call him Mr. DeMille.

VALENTINE: Yes.

VERDINE: Because he's such a great director, he has a gift.

And he organizes us very well.

And so it really is great working with him and an honor working with him.

VALENTINE: Yeah.

VERDINE: And the show is- is on the level that everybody knows us to be and it really is a wonderful thing that he's put together and what we're participating in.

VALENTINE: So, Philip, are you calling out the songs or do you have a set list, how do you work it?

PHILIP: There's a method to the madness.

VALENTINE: Okay.

PHILIP: I'll just say it like that, there's a method to the madness.

And, you know, I try to, you know, to put together, a- a- if it's 60 minutes, 70 minutes, or 90 minutes, a 90 minute set that if we hit our marks, as they say on Broadway... VALENTINE: Yeah.

PHILIP: Just do what's on the board.

VALENTINE: Mm-hmm.

PHILIP: You know, we're gonna get great reaction every single night.

I don't know if you've ever been asked this question, what is the significance of September 21st in the lyrics?

PHILIP: It has none.

RALPH: Right.

There is no significance.

PHILIP: It just sounded good.

VALENTINE: We can put it to bed forever, right?

RALPH: It's a lyric that worked.

PHILIP: Sounded good.

RALPH: Here we are.

VALENTINE: Isn't that funny?

PHILIP: Maurice, you know, you know, the thing sounded good and, you know, the rest is history.

VALENTINE: For so many years, people have been trying to come up with so many theories of what that night meant.

PHILIP: Right, right.

VERDINE: Right.

VALENTINE: You know?

PHILIP: But you know what the good thing about it, it means something different for everyone.

And it's, you know, they can make it, you know, their's, their own.

VALENTINE: But hold on, Philip, were you not into that song at first?

I'd heard that.

PHILIP: Come on, man.

VALENTINE: I told you that we do the research.

You got mad at me about espresso, but we do our research.

When we- when we did our- 'cause we used to have our listening sessions after, you know, we did, you know, projects and stuff.

So we- I remember it real distinctly, don't listen to the- during the listening session, you know, listen to the record.

And when "September" came on, it's not that I did not like it, it was just that I didn't- I wasn't all jazzed on it like, you know, maybe someone else was.

VALENTINE: Okay.

PHILIP: And I thought it was a little s- you know, simple, you know?

So I said, "I don't get it," you know?

VALENTINE: Yeah.

PHILIP: But it wasn't that I didn't like it, but I was definitely wrong.

VALENTINE: When do you think you got it?

When do you think it hit you and said, oh.

RALPH: 20 million copies later.

PHILIP: You right.

Right, right.

VALENTINE: That would be it.

PHILIP: 50 years later, you know.

RALPH: Oh, now I get it, yeah.

PHILIP: 50 years later and going.

VALENTINE: Now it's come to me.

RALPH: This is a really happening hook.

PHILIP: That's a pretty strong song there.

VALENTINE: Sin City has become a hotbed for residencies, it really has.

I mean, we're talking about Shania Twain, Garth Brooks, Adele, Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton, Rod Stewart, the Eagles.

I mean, residencies are just blowing up there.

Why should Earth, Wind & Fire's Vegas show be the one that everybody should see?

PHILIP: Well, I think because the music has become part of the soundtrack of everybody's life.
